Error activating staging/dev add-on for testing purposes

The KB article says that trial/test licenses can be installed/activated without any limitations on systems like localhost: https://stockmanagementlabs.crunch.help/en/sml-account-management/how-to-activate-a-license-of-a-premium-add-on

However, trying to activate on http://localhost:8080/ returns an error: "On this site you previosuly had installed this add-on. So you cannot install this trial." on a freshly installed staging/development local system.

Thanks for your post.

Please note that staging rules only apply to full licenses. You have a trial. It can be installed on only one site. Per security reasons, we don't allow repeated URLs. If somebody used the localhost URL before you, you won't be able to use it.
I kindly suggest you use a unique URL to test your trial.

Trial licenses should not be restricted single use for obvious dev/staging hosts like localhost, 127.0.0.1, etc. @japiera this is obviously something that should have been considered in the licensing logic instead of forcing everyone to come up with fake unique hosts just because ATUM did not think of it.

Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

We thought about that. The problem was that we offer trials for only 15 days. If we let URLs be repeated, anybody would be able to create a new user and install the trial again. That is something we wanted to prevent.

japiera Agree on that, but how a perpetually prolonged trial license is of any usefulness on a localhost or a 127.0.0.1 machine?

localhost and 127.0.0.1 may have other URLs or IPs.

We aren't going to modify our criteria, sorry.

Sorry, but we aren't going to study how people could benefit or not by allowing those IPs or URLs. We decided that this was how we wanted it to work.
