The more automated the purchasing process, the less it is practical to do a sanity check on best before dates. Sometimes suppliers take the mickey, and send short dated stock.
So an automated check would be useful. For example, compare the time to expiry of the best before date (with a buffer for customers' use) with average selling quantities, and display a probability or confidence that the date will not be exceeded. Or a warning when a probabilty is exceeded.
